SecondMarket Valued At $200 Million After Investment By Former Facebook Exec.

By Steven Bertoni

Barry Silbert and his private stock dealer, SecondMarket, are on a roll. On Wednesday the Manhattan-based firm announced that The Social+Capital Partnership–a VC founded by former Facebook growth guru, Chamath Palihapitiya–invested $15 million in a Series C funding round. Current valuation: $200 million.

Silbert started SecondMarket in 2004 with four employees, two telephones and a Dell computer to broker shares of restricted stock and other illiquid assets often left in the wake of bankruptcies. The company has moved into other tough-to-trade products like mortgage-backed securities, CDOs and is now a leader in trading private shares of sexy companies like Facebook, Twitter and Dropbox. Palihapitiya is the latest in series of high profile VC’s to plough cash into SecondMarket. Silbert has already attracted investments from Lawrence Lenihan of FirstMark Capital, New Enterprise Associates, SVB Financial Group,  Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing and Singapore’s Temasek Holdings.
